AGM and Awards Evening 2010

WSPH held their annual general meeting and presentation of awards nights recently.  The evening was well attended by Junior and senior athletes many of whom received awards for their contribution, effort and achievement in the club over the past year. Chairman Norman White opened with a brief over view on the challenges to athletics in the area and achievements of the club over the past year. These include uncertaintity over the possibility of a new track at Redlands, the need for more coaches and helpers in the club as well as the huge increase in participation in competition by the juniors in the club and significant achievements by many club members

Several athletes were multiple winners in the awards part of the evening. Benedict Westhenry was awarded both the TG Copp Cup (presented by Brian Copp) and Certificate Outstanding Achievement for the 3rd year in a row.   Coach Pete Clarke highlighted Ben’s achievements over the last year which included top 10 ranking in the UK for the 1500m, Mile & 3000m, setting 4 new club records and  a Dorset record,  as well as winning the McCains UK Cross challenge in Cross country.  He also won the Dave Buck cup for Cross country. Ben  shared t U15 Male Competitor of the Year with Jake Guildford who set 2 club records in the Shot & Javelin and like Ben represented Dorset in Schools and club competitions.

Double winners were Jake Pitney who set 3 club records, who won U11 boy Best Effort & Competitor of the Yea;  Lauryn Montrose who won U 11 girl Best Effort & Competitor of the Year.  Max Drummond won U13 boy Best Effort & Competitor of the Year. Saxon Roy, who equalled the club record in the High Jump and also represented Dorset in Schools and Club competitions won U 13 Girl Best Effort & Competitor of the Year. Under 15 Female competitor of the Year was Abi Strong and Under 17 male Competitor of the Year was Tom Austin.

The Club Scholarship went to Jessica Austin and Emily Jewszel won the Sunshine Cup.  Best Senior man was Pete Clarke and Best senior woman was Carol Smith.  Chris Saddlington, who has spent many hours at the Marsh repairing the facilities especially the Long Jump pits, was Awarded the Babb Rose Bowl and the Road Running cup went to Sandra Hood.  The loyalty test Cup went to coach Sarah Fraher who has put in a huge effort organising and managing the juniors at many competitions over the year and long standing Coach Tony Falkner was awarded the Outstanding Dedication & Effort Plaque.

All children who competed in the last year received medals. Junior support helpers Daryanne Ryan and Matt Carpenter were on hand to present most of the awards as well as receiving plaques themselves for the support they have given the club.
The club still need volunteers to help in all aspects of the club including coaching.  If anyone is interested in becoming a coach or has any free time they can offer to the club please contact Anna Ryan on 01305 761667. The club will organise any required training.
